David Chapman
*David M. Chapman

*David Madison Chapman joined Capt. Murphy's Company, Alabama Mounted Volunteers later called 3rd Alabama Cavalry, Company F  on 18 November 1861 in Perry County, Alabama.  He was enlisted by Capt. Samuel Jennings Murphy as a Private for 12 months.

He was living in Polecat Beat, Perry County, Alabama when he enlisted of that I am sure but it is his age that I am not sure of.  His Compiled Military Service record lists him as 20 years old when he joined but I think that he was only 16 or 17.

*Daivd took his horse to war with him. His horse was valued at $225 and his horse equipment at $25.

He was listed on the following company muster rolls:
18 Nov to 31 Dec 1861
30 Apr to June 30 1863
31 Oct to 31 Dec 1863

David served as nurse in the hospital in Ringgold Apr 1 1863 to June 1-30 1863.
Normally cavalry soldiers recieved pay for their horse as well as pay for themselves.  But not in this case, while David served as a nurse he was paid for his time but not for risk and use of his horse.

At the end of the war he was in Selma, Alabama on June 1865.

David M. Chapman was born in 1844 in Perry County Alabama . David's father was William Chapman.

There are two other men in this unit with the last name of Chapman, John and Henry (brothers).  John and Henry are first cousins to David.  David's father and John and Henry's father were brothers.   In the 1850 census they lived near each other.

Judy Talkington sent me the following information:

"David and George S. were two of William and Esther (Seagler) Chapman's 13
children.  They were born and raised in Perry County, Alabama.  William,
according to his obituary was a deacon of the Hopewell Baptist Church which
is still there, so I presume the children were raised in that church.
George S., however became a Methodist at some point and was active in the
Methodist Church in Colorado County.  He and David lived next door to each
other in the Osage Community in Colorado County. They were farmers and
businessmen.  They owned a cotton gin.  I have a deed from Colorado County
showing that David Chapman and another business associate donated land for a
school.  I plan to go to Kaufman County next week to see what I can find out
there about the time the Chapmans spent there.  If I come up with any
additional information about David, I will send it along.
I am not a descendant of David Madison Chapman, but I am a descendant of his
older brother, George Seagler Chapman.  After the Civil War, David M.
Chapman returned to Texas with his brother George and several of their
younger siblings.  He married Husie T. (?) and they had one daughter, Ida.
His wife was a native Texan. After living in Anderson and Kaufman Counties
they eventually settled in Colorado County.

I also have a copy of Husie T. Chapman's application for a Confederate
Pension filed in 1916 which was rejected because she had not appeared before
a county judge in Bexar County (San Antonio) Texas where she was then living
with her daughter and son-in-law, whose married name was Jones.  Apparently
she died before the matter could be straightened out."

As staff came across information related to Alabama individuals during the American Civil War a card was created. Information on individuals exempted from military service or who served in the militia or home guard is included. If new information was discovered from another source, another card was created. Multiple cards for an individual often exist. Sources include muster rolls, governors' correspondence, veterans' censuses, manuscript collections, newspapers and pension records. Names, places and events are often inconsistently spelled."
