*Richard Bailey joined Capt. Murphy's Company, Alabama Mounted Volunteers later called 3rd Alabama Cavalry, Company F  on 18 Nov 1861 in Marion, Perry County, Alabama at the age of 35 years.  He was enlisted by Capt. Samuel Jennings Murphy as a private for 12 months.

*Richard took his horse to war with him. His horse was valued at $105 and horse equipment at $25.

Notes from Richard's  Compiled Military Service Records state that he appeared on the regular company muster roll for:
18 Nov to 31 Dec 1861

On 30 Dec 1862  Richard was a patient at Camp Direction Hospital in Chattanooga Tenn.

Then he appeared on the hospital muster roll as a patient for  Mar and Apr 1863.

In May 1863 he was well enough to be attached to Direction Hospital in Griffin, Georgia as Act Steward.
He was listed on the hospital muster roll for Sept 1 to Nov 30 1863.
Apparently Richard went out and bought supplies for the hospital for which
he was then reimbursed.
This is an image from his Compiled Military Service Record. Note that eggs were a $1.50 a dozen.

On the 31 Aug 1863 Richard was paid for use and risk of horse at 20 cents a
