Benjamin Caraway
*Benjamin F Caraway

On 18 Nov 1861 *Benjamin joined Capt. Murphy's Company, Alabama Mounted Volunteers later called 3rd Alabama Cavalry, Company F as a Private.   He was enlisted by Capt. Samuel Jennings Murphy  for 12 months.  He was 24 years old.

Benjamin took his horse to war with him. His horse was valued at $175 and his horse equipment at $20.

I am not exactly sure which county he was living in when he enlisted. In 1860 he was in Marengo county and his Compiled Military Service records say he enlisted from Perry or Greene. In 1880 Benjamin is living in Hale county.

Benjamin was sent to the hospital at least twice.  The first time was on 28 November 1862 and he was sent to the hospital in Dalton, Georgia with pneumonia. He returned to duty the next month, 17 December 1862.

A year and a month later, 27 January 1864 he was wounded near McNutte? Mill January 27 1864 sent to the hospital at Butts Gap. I am thinking that Butts Gap must have been near Montg. Springs VA. because in Ben's Compiled Military Service records there is a receipt for clothing dated 9 February 1864, gen. Hosp. Montg. Springs VA.

Ben was on the following company muster rolls:
18 Nov to 31 Dec 1861
30 Apr to 30 June 1863
31 Oct to 31 Dec 1863

There is a Compiled Military Service record for a B F Harroway and for a long time I thought that he was a different person but now I think that the clerk that created that  card was in error.  And that if I am able to see the original document I would be able to see that the name really was Carraway.

The compiled military service record for B F Harroway only has one entry
that lists him as paroled at Demopolis, Ala, June 14 1865.

*Benjamin F Caraway was born 1837 in North Carolina. At the age of 13 he was a student living with Cassandra Liey in North Carolina, Craven County, New Berne. It is possible that she was kin to him.
Ten years later *Benjamin was employed as Overseer in 1860 near Newburn post office, Marengo County, Alabama.

*Benjamin married Sarah T. --.  Sarah was born in 1849 in Alabama.  And in 1880 they were living in Hale county with three children:

     i.     Benjamin H Caraway was born in 1877 in Alabama.

ii.     Charles Caraway was born in 1878 in Alabama.

iii.     Thomas E Caraway was born in Mar 1880 in Hale county, Alabama.
