George Carter
*George W. Carter

*George W. Carter joined Capt. Murphy's Company, Alabama Mounted Volunteers later called 3rd Alabama Cavalry, Company F  on 18 November 1861 in Perry County, Alabama at the age of 22  years.  He was enlisted by Capt. Samuel Jennings Murphy as a Private for 12 months.

*George took his horse to war with him. His horse was valued at $175 and his horse equipment at $20.

On the company muster roll for 18 Nov to 31 Dec 1861 George was listed as sick in his quarters.
I think that perhaps George left the service shortly after this time because he is not listed in later company muster rolls.

George was born in 1840 in Alabama.
Ten years later he is  living in Perry county  with Barbany Carter age 30 female born South Carolina.  Samuel and Polly were also living with George(age 10) in 1850
Samuel Carter (age 15) was born in 1835 in South Carolina.
Polly Carter (age 12) was born in 1838 in Alabama.
It is possible that Samuel and Polly and George were children of Barbany but it is  also possible that she is a relative taking care of them. If she had been their mother she would only have been 15 when Samuel was born.

After the war *George married Mary Rhinart in 1866 in Perry county. Mary was born in 1857 in Alabama.

They had a son named Walter Carter was born in 1869 in Perry county, Alabama.
