T. W. Casay
*T. W. Casay

I realize that T. W. Casay has a card in the compiled military service records that places him in this unit. But at this point I believe that to be incorrect.

This is the image of the card.  Note that it says Newton Co. Missouri as place of residence. This information was taken from a list of stagglers who were paroled in Selma, Alabama in June 1865.

I am thinking that it is possible that an incorrect unit was given or written down when the information was orginally gathered from the stragglers.

If T. W. Casay had been in this unit he would probably have been on the muster roll of Oct 1864 and he is not. Though I suppose it is possible that he joined this unit after October of 1864.  And there should have been a card for him Alabama Civil War Service Cards File at the Alabama Department of Archives and History and there is not.

Here is the little blip from the Archives about this file:

"As staff came across information related to Alabama individuals during the American Civil War a card was created. Information on individuals exempted from military service or who served in the militia or home guard is included. If new information was discovered from another source, another card was created. Multiple cards for an individual often exist. Sources include muster rolls, governors' correspondence, veterans' censuses, manuscript collections, newspapers and pension records. Names, places and events are often inconsistently spelled. This card file is in no way inclusive. Every card has empty fields. Because much of the documentation relating to the Army of Tennessee was lost, soldiers that served in that army tend to be poorly documented. The cards are arranged alphabetically by last name; however, they are closed and microfilm is available."  There is a transcription of the cards from A-O  on line. Use this link

So why would his compiled military service record say that he was from this unit if he was not? hummmm....  I will have to do some more checking.

There are persons with the last name of Casay are found in 1860 and 1870 census  in Dallas and Perry county Alabama and it is possible that T. W. is related to them.  I do not see any Casay in 1860 and 1870 census Newton Co., Missouri though there are some Casy.

Questions, queries,  ...... hummmmm..........
