     *Benjamin F Austin joined Capt. Murphy's Company, Alabama Mounted Volunteers later called 3rd Alabama Cavalry, Company F in Perry County, Alabama on  18 Nov 1861 at the age of 24.   He was enlisted by Capt. Murphy as a private.

Benjamin took his horse to war with him. His horse was valued at $275 and horse equipment at $20.

Even though he first enlist for a period of 12 months he stayed for the whole war. Since he was listed on the on the following Muster Rolls:
18 Nov to Dec 31 1861
30 Apr to 30 Jun 1863
      31 Oct to 31 Dec 1863
       31 Oct 1864

Notes from Benjamin's  Compiled Military Service Records state that he was detailed as teamster to Capt Boykin  Sept 3, 1862 by order of Col. Comd.  And that his name appears as a signature to a Parole of Prisoners of War, sworn and subscribed to May 16, 1865, at Marion, Alabama.


From the census *Benjamin appears to have been  born about 1832 in Georgia.  But his military records state he was 24 when he enlisted and that would make him born about 1837.  He was buried in White Cemetery, Perry County, Alabama. He first married (1) Francis Oaks on 6 Feb 1864 in Perry County, Alabama.

They had the following children:

     M     i.     William Austin was born in 1867 in Perry county, Alabama .

     F     ii.     Fanny Austin was born in 1869 in Perry county, Alabama .

In 1870 *Benjamin lived with his  second wife Josephine and in  Perry County, Alabama, where he
labored as a farmer.   In 1880  Ben resided in Radfordsville, Perry County, Alabama.  *Benjamin
married (2) E. Josephine Richardson on 4 Feb 1870 in Perry County, Alabama.

E. Josephine Richardson was born in 1848 in Alabama .

They had the following children:

          F     iii.     Mary Austin was born in Apr 1872 in  Perry county, Alabama.
Mary married William A. Rodgers on 24 Feb 1889 in Perry County, Alabama. William was born in Apr 1850.


*Benjamin married (3) Rebecca F Richardson daughter of Thomas Richardson on 27 Jan 1876 in Perry County, Alabama. Rebecca was born in Jul 1845 in Perry County, Alabama. She died on 22 Apr 1921 in Perry County, Alabama. She was buried in White Cemetery, Perrry County, Alabama.

She is a widow on the 1900 census.


*Benjamin and Rebecca had the following children:

          F     iv.     Elizabeth Austin  was born in 1877 in Perry County, Alabama.

          M     v.     Joseph Austin was born in 1879 in Perry County, Alabama.

          M     vi.     Benjamin F Austin was born on 2 Feb 1881 in Perry County, Alabama. He died on 11 Feb 1954 in Dallas County, Alabama. He was buried on 13 Feb 1954 in Pine Flat Cemetery.

          F     vii.     Sallie Austin was born in Dec 1886 in Perry County, Alabama.

          M     viii.Thomas R Austin was born in Feb 1889 in Perry County, Alabama.
