Wesley Brown
*Wesley Brown

*Wesley Brown enlisted 18 Nov 1861 in Perry County at the age of 25 as a private.  The record for his parole at the end of the Civil War lists his place of residence as Marengo County, Alabama. Capt Samuel Jennings Murphy enlisted Wesley into Capt. Murphy's Company Alabama Mounted Volunteers for a period of 12 months.  This company later became F Company. Wesley served for the entire war and at the end of the war he was paroled at Demopolis, Alabama on 9 June 1865.

Wesley's horse was valued at $275 and his horse equipment at $25.

Wesley is counted on the following Company Muster rolls:
18 Nov to 31 Dec 1861
30 Apr to 30 Jun 1863
31 Oct to 31 Dec 1863

The card for the October muster roll is interesting. It has the date 15 Feb 1864 and it lists Wesley as being absent and there is the following remark: under arrest by order of Genl. Martin.

*Wesley was born in 1835 in Alabama. In 1850 he was living in Perry County, Alabama. He was15 years old in 1850 and he was living with the schoolteacher, John M Ken. Listed in the household above him was Louisa Brown age 13.

In 1860, just before he joined the war, Wesley was employed as an overseer in Marengo county.

A card from the Alabama archives listed that Wesley moved to Texas. I found him in Brazos County, Texas on the 1870 census. He is listed with a total real estate value of 22,200.

There was a marriage in Perry County for Wesley Brown and Amelia Cry on 24 Dec 1868.  But if this him, then for some reason she is not listed with him in Texas two years later. It is possible that she died.

As staff came across information related to Alabama individuals during the American Civil War a card was created. Information on individuals exempted from military service or who served in the militia or home guard is included. If new information was discovered from another source, another card was created.
