Thomas Norris
*Thomas Norris

*Thomas Norris was born in 1842 in Alabama . He died in the battle of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Thomas enlisted 18 Nov 1861 in Dallas county at the age of 20.
He was enlisted by Capt Samuel Jennings Murphy into Capt. Murphy's
Company Alabama Mounted Volunteers for a period of 12 months. He was a Corporal when he when he first joined. I am uncertain exactly when he was promoted to 1 Lieutenant but he was promoted to the rank of  2 Lieutenant on 8 Oct 1862. By the end of the war he had been promoted to Captain.

Thomas is mentioned in James Hagan's report. "At Chappell Hill N.C. our command had quite a severe affair with the Enemy in which the gallant young Captain, Thos. Norris, of Co. F. was killed. This was the last engagement of our command. "

Thomas took his horse to war with him. His horse was valued at $276 and his horse equipment at $35.

He was listed on the following Company Muster rolls:
18 Nov to Dec 31 1861
30 Apr to 30 June 1863  as 1 Lieut.
31 Oct to 31 Dec 1863 absent on furlough

I guess every one got something from the Quartermaster's supplies, at one time or another.
Most of the time we can only guess at what was requested. But in the case of Thomas I know he requested something.

The writing looks  like 3 jars of Jenn but I don't know if I am reading this right or not.
It looks like, whatever it was, it cost $18.00!

In the 1850 and 1860 census Thomas lived with his parents in Selma, Dallas county, Alabama. Thomas's father was  William J. Norris was born in 1807 in Georgia.
