*Samuel Orr  enlisted on the 18 Nov 1861 in Marengo county Alabama for 12
months as a private.  He enlisted into Capt. Murphy's Company Alabama Mounted Volunteers at the age of 48 years old.


Samuel Orr is mentioned in the Letter of Samuel John.  Which brings up an interesting question of his age.  Samuel John said Mr. Orr was 65 years of age in 1861.  The Compiled Military Service Records list his age as 48 in 1861 and the 1860 Federal census list him as being 50 years of age in 1860. In 1850 he is 38 years old.

He was on the muster roll for 18 Nov to 31 Dec 1861.

The horse he took to war was valued at $275 and his equipment at $20.

*Samuel was counted in a census in 1850 in Marengo county, Alabama.  He was counted in a census in 1860 in Marengo county, Alabama. He had  real estate valued at $4500 and personal property valued at $26,000. He was employed as Land lord in 1860.

In 1860 census Samuel Orr age 50, was living with   A. L. age 42 and Emma
age 11 and Ellen age 2.


*Samuel was born in 1810 in Ireland.  He married Amanda . Amanda was born in South Carolina.

They had the following children:

          F     i.     Emma Orr was born in 1849 in Marengo county, Alabama.

It is possible that   Ellen born 1858 in Marengo county is also his daughter.
