Anderson H. Givhan
*Anderson Holmes Givhan was born in 1844 in Uniontown, Perry county, Alabama . He died on 12 Mar 1916 in Gastonburg, Wilcox county, Alabama. He was buried in In Pope Family cemetery in Safford, in south east Perry county.
Anderson joined the Curry Draggons also called 3rd Alabama Cavalry, Company F on 25 January 1862 in Perry County, Alabama at the age of 18 years. He was enlisted by Capt. Samuel Jennings Murphy as a Private.
Shortly after the company formed the measles broke out. Many of the men got sick and some were sent home others recuperated and continued on into battle.
Here are the comments from Anderson from an interview given after the war about 1905.
"The Company at once started for Tennessee. It went up on the M. & O. Railroad and disembarked at Bethel, a small station north of Corinth. There Mr. Givhan took the measles, and with W. F. Setzler was sent to a hospital in Corinth. In the meantime, the Company itself was quarantined on account of the measles and was stationed at Rienze. While he was ill, Mr. Givhan says that the Company had some small engagements. Later it was assigned to the 3rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment, under Col. James Hagan, on the formation of that command." interview notes of A. H. Givhan
Anderson was listed on the following company muster rolls:

The information for the children's births were given to me from John Givhan, great grandson of Anderson.
John also told me that Anderson lost his left arm in a cotton gin accident near Uniontown in Perry county.
It is interesting to me that many of the decendants from these soldiers also served their county in battle. I wonder what Anderson would have thought when he learned that his great great grandson John was fighting in Vietnam exacty hundred years after Anderson himself fought in the Civil War.
John told me the following about himself.

John wrote book about his adventures in life in his autobiography: Rice and Cotton: South Vietnam and South Alabama. This book is available on amazon.com.
John was also an active participant in film documentary: In the Shadow of the Blade 2002 - 2005"
Patrick and Cheryl Fries, Arrowhead Film
said "We first met John Givhan in 2000 when
we were filming the ITSOTB proposal at Fort Rucker. Two years had gone by and we'd lost touch with him, so had no way to tell him that the mission was off the ground. Two days before filming in Columbus, Givhan was waiting for sports scores on the local news when he saw a Huey on the screen and turned up the volume. He was shocked and delighted to see that "In The Shadow of The Blade" was making its way across the country, and picked up the phone to call Austin, fearing he'd missed his opportunity. We were thrilled to be "reunited" with John. "Can you get to Columbus two days from now?" And that is how, three decades after the man who'd saved Givhan's life died while trying to save another, John Givhan met his hero's son and grandson."
