James Dollins
James W. Dollins

*James W. Dollins   joined Capt. Murphy's Company, Alabama Mounted Volunteers later called 3rd Alabama Cavalry, Company F  on 18 Nov 1861 in  Perry County, Alabama at the age of 25 years.  He was enlisted by Capt. Samuel Jennings Murphy for 12 months.   He was a private when he enlisted and still a private in 1863 but I know that at some point he became a Second Corporal. Because in October of 1864 he is listed on the company muster roll as a 2nd Corporal.

*James took his horse to war with him. His horse was valued at $175 and horse equipment at $20.

He was listed in the following Company Muster Rolls:
18 Nov to 31 Dec 1861
30 Apr to June 30 1863
Oct 31 to Dec 31 1863
Oct 31 1864

James was paroled at Demopolis Alabama on June 21 1865.

*James W. Dollins was born in 1835 in Alabama. I think he may have been born in Perry county.

After the war *James married Francis Johnson on 30 Nov 1865 in Perry County, Alabama.  They moved to Choctaw county and  had one son that I know of:

William Dollins was born in 1867 in Choctaw, Alabama.

In 1870 James real estate property is valued at 1500 and his personal property is valued at 1000.
Living in James household in 1870 is an Elizabeth Dollins age 64. She is a relation to James but I think it is possible that this Elizabeth is his aunt and the wife of Riley Dollins.

On a roll made up by Capt Cole in 1905 there is a note  that says James had moved to Texas.  On the 1910 census I did find a James W Dollins living in Mclennan county, Texas. Perhaps that is our James.  He would be about the right age.  Perhaps later I will know for sure.

I think that James father was Richard Dollins who  was born in 1805 in Virginia.

Richard lived in Perry county, Alabama and was employed as machanic in 1850.  He owned 4 slaves in 1850.

He had the following children:

     F     i.     R F Dollins was born in 1824 in Virginia.
M     ii.     Robert Dollins was born in 1828 in Virginia.
F     iii.     V Dollins was born in 1830 in Virginia.
M     iv.     Joseph Dollins was born in 1832 in Virginia.
F     v.     Matilda Dollins was born in 1834 in Virginia.
M     vi.     *James W. Dollins was born in 1835 in Alabama
M     vii.     A. J. Dollins was born in 1838 in Alabama.
M     viii.     John Dollins was born in 1840 in Alabama.
