Drayton Dobbins
*Drayton H Dobbins

Men were always recruit for the war but the Cavalry also recruited horses.  In July of 1864 Drayton Dobbins was detailed to recruit horses by order of General Wheeler.   It is interesting to note that cavalry soldiers recieved pay for themselves and their horses.   So it makes me wonder:  Did some families send their horse to war if they did not have a son to send?

*Drayton H Dobbins joined Capt. Murphy's Company, Alabama Mounted Volunteers later called 3rd Alabama Cavalry, Company F in Perry County, Alabama on  18 Nov 1861 at the age of 21.
He was enlisted by Capt. Murphy as a private for 12 months.
Drayton took his horse to war with him. His horse was valued at $125 and horse equipment at $15.

*Drayton was also listed by the name Draton H Dobbins.

He was listed on the following Company Muster rolls:
30 apr to June 30 1863
18 nov to dec 31 1861
      31 Oct to 31 Dec 1863
       31 Oct 1864

His name appears in a list of Prisoners of War surrendered to
Brig. Gen E. M. Mccook by Maj. Gen Sam Jones CSA at Tallahassee, Florida
on 10 May 1865.

He was paroled Albany, Ga on 17 May 1865.

At some point a  pension was applied for, number 17311, Perry county.  Pension application witnessed by Harvey Stone and W. J. Mitchell. Both these men served with Drayton.  I will go and see this pension application and see it has some more clues for me.
