Erarmus Darwin Eiland
Erarmus Darwin Eiland joined Capt. Murphy's Company, Alabama Mounted Volunteers later called 3rd Alabama Cavalry, Company F on 18 Nov 1861 in Marion, Perry County, Alabama at the age of 34 years. He was enlisted by Capt. Samuel Jennings Murphy as a private for 12 months.
Though he entered as a private Erarmus was a surgeon during the war. I suppose during he war he went where ever he was assigned. According to his compiled military service record he was at least present in the following places:
Hospital, Tunnel Hill, Georgia
Hospital near Shelbyville, Tenn.
He must have wrote a lot of letters because he requested stationary when he was in Shelbyville, Tenn in 1 January 1863 to 31 March 1863 ; 50 small envelopes, 21 lead pencils, 1 quires letter paper and 1 quires foolscap paper.
Erarmus took his horse to war with him. His horse was valued at $300 and horse equipment at $20.
He appears on the following Muster Rolls:

30 Apr to June 30 1863
On July 22 1863 he was on the register of the Hospital in Tunnel Hill, Georgia and he had chronic diarrhea and on 7Aug he was furloughed. At this time he was also paid $11.
Erasmus was born in about 1828 in Perry county, Alabama. After the war he married Mary Carlisle and they had four children:
Saint Ledger Greenfield Eiland born 1870
Carrie H Eiland born 1871
Alice B Eiland born 1877
Albert Sidney Eiland born 1879.
Erasmus's brother Lake Erie was also in this same company.
