John Kenedy | Milton Jones
John Kenedy
*John Kenedy
*John Kenedy enlisted 18 Nov 1861 in Perry county at the age of 29.
He was enlisted by Capt Samuel Jennings Murphy into Capt. Murphy's
Company Alabama Mounted Volunteers for a period of 12 months.
John's horse was valued at $275 and his horse equipment at $25.
His name appears on the following Muster Rolls:
18 Nov to 31 Dec 1861
30 Apr to 30 June 1863
John was missing in action at Elk River on 2 July 1863.
He appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War paroled and permitted to stay home.
He was captured 27 Aug 1863 in Larkinsville, (Jackson county) Alabama.
He was captured by the 1st Cavalry Division and paroled by Capt E. A.
Hancock.
John signed an Oath of Allegiance to the United States, subscribed and sworn
to at Military Prison, Louisville, Ky., Sept. 23, 1863. His oath was to remain
North of Ohio river. He gave his place of residence as Paint Rock, Tennessee.
(Paint Rock is in Roane county Tenn. But there is also a Paint Rock in Jackson county Alabama which is near Huntsville.)
John had a fair complexion and black hair and black eyes and was 5 feet and
8 inches tall.
At this point I am not sure who John's family was. I looked for him in 1870 in
Jackson county Alabama because I thought if he was missing in action then
he must have went home, if he could. And he was captured in Jackson county
and allowed to remain at home. So if Jackson county was his home in 1863
maybe it was his home in 1870. I was able to locate a John W Kenedy of the
right age living with his wife Nancy in 1870 Federal Census Alabama,
Jackson county, post office Scottsboro, page 10. By 1880 this Nancy was
living with just the two children Stephen A Kenedy and Any. John apparently
was dead by 1880.

As staff came across information related to Alabama individuals during the American Civil War a card was created. Information on individuals exempted from military service or who served in the militia or home guard is included. If new information was discovered from another source, another card was created. Multiple cards for an individual often exist. Sources include muster rolls, governors' correspondence, veterans' censuses, manuscript collections, newspapers and pension records. Names, places and events are often inconsistently spelled.".
