Josiah Robins
Josiah Robins

During the Civil War Josiah was a Colonel in the Third Regiment Alabama Cavalry of which Company F was a part.

At the age of 36 he was the first Captain of Robins' Company, Alabama Mounted Volunteers, later called company C. He was later promoted to Major and then to Lieutenant Colonel and then Colonel.

He Joined for duty 26 Oct 1861 in Mobile, but was from Wilcox county.

It is interesting that in January 1864 he had 5 private horses each had a daily allowance of 12 pounds of corn and 10 1/2 pounds of fodder.  I had no idea that horses ate that much food.

Russell Carothers provided me with this picture and information about his ancestor Josiah.

"My great great grandfather's portrait hangs on 3rd floor by elevator!" (in the Alabama State Archives building) Russell Carothers

Colonel Josiah Robins was severally wounded in a daylight skirmish against Kilpatrick's Camp near Fayetteville, N.C.,  Feb. 1865.  When Sarah, his wife, heard of his injury she  traveled by buggy all the way to Shelbyville, Tennessee to nurse her husband back to health.

Several of the letters that Josiah wrote his wife still exist and here is one of them.

Josiah was born October 7, 1825 at Saint Martins, Worchester County, Maryland.
He died at Lower Peachtree, Wilcox county, Alabama, June 11, 1901.

His father was John Lyttleton Bowdin Robins and his mother was Henrietta (Showell) Robins.

Josiah and Sarah had 10 children:
Henrietta Gregg Robins
Samuel Wales Robins
Elizabeth Adele Robins
Josiah Showell Robins
Henry Bowdoin Robins
Jane Margaret Robins
John Lyttleton Brooks Robins
Sarah Strother Robins
Oliver Gregg Robins
Martha Ezra Robins

It is amazing to me how well historical documents have preserved the life of Josiah. His love for his family and country will be with us always.
